When to replace a pickleball paddle
How long pickleball paddles last, the six signs a paddle is worn out or broken, how to make yours last longer, and what to check before you buy a new one.
How long a paddle lasts
It depends on how often you play, how hard you hit and how the paddle is built. A recreational player who plays twice a week will usually get much longer from a paddle than a 4.5 player drilling every day. There is no fixed number of months, so watch for the signs below instead.
Six signs it is time
- Dead spots: the ball comes off one area of the face noticeably slower or with a duller sound.
- Lost grit: the face feels smooth and your spin has dropped. Gritty faces wear down with use.
- Rattling: something moves inside the paddle when you shake it.
- Delamination: the face lifts away from the core, often showing as a soft or bubbly patch.
- Core crush: the paddle suddenly feels much more powerful and less controllable. This has been reported on some thermoformed builds.
- Cracks in the edge guard, throat or handle.
Make it last longer
- Do not leave it in a hot car. Heat can soften adhesives and affect the core.
- Clean the face with a damp cloth or a dedicated face eraser, not harsh chemicals.
- Use a paddle cover, and do not scrape the edge on the court to pick up balls.
- Replace the grip and overgrip when they get slick; that is cheaper than a new paddle.
Before you buy a new one
If you play sanctioned events, check the new paddle is on the USA Pickleball approved list. If you liked your old paddle, use our compare tool to find models with similar swing weight, twist weight and spin.
Common questions
- Do pickleball paddles wear out?
- Yes. Faces lose grit, cores can soften or crush, and the face can separate from the core. The signs above tell you when.
- Can you fix a dead pickleball paddle?
- Usually not. A crushed core or delaminated face cannot be repaired at home. Check the brand's warranty, since many cover defects for a period after purchase.
- Why does my paddle feel more powerful than it used to?
- Some paddles get livelier as the core breaks in. A sudden, large jump in power can mean the core has crushed, which may also make the paddle fail a deflection test at a tournament.
