Why swing weight matters more

Two paddles that weigh the same on a scale can feel very different in the hand. Swing weight measures how heavy the paddle feels in motion, and it depends on where the mass sits. More weight toward the tip means a higher swing weight: more power, slower hands.

If you compare paddles, compare swing weight first, then twist weight, which measures stability on off-centre hits. Scale weight comes third.

How to choose

  • Arm, elbow or shoulder pain: pick a low swing weight with a high twist weight, not just a light paddle.
  • Mostly doubles at the kitchen: lighter or midweight for faster hands.
  • Mostly singles or a big drive: midweight to heavy.
  • Unsure: start midweight. You can add lead tape later, but you cannot take weight off.

Common questions

What is a good weight for a pickleball paddle?
Most players do well between 7.5 and 8.2 oz. The median paddle in our database weighs 8.0 oz.
Is a heavier pickleball paddle better?
Heavier paddles are more stable and powerful for the same swing, but slower at the net and harder on the arm. Neither is better for everyone.
What weight paddle is best for seniors?
Usually midweight with a low swing weight and high twist weight. A very light paddle can twist on mishits, which is harder on the wrist and elbow.
