How to reset in pickleball, with drills

How to reset a hard shot into the kitchen in pickleball, from mid-court or the net, with three reset drills, from beginner to 4.0+.

For players rated 3.0+

When to use it

A reset takes a hard, attacking ball and blocks it softly into the kitchen, turning defence back into a neutral dink rally.

Reset when you're caught in mid-court (the transition zone) or stretched at the net and can't counter-attack safely.

  1. 1.Soft-hands block

    With a partner2.5–3.0

Builds the feel of absorbing pace with a relaxed grip.

    1. Stand at mid-court. Your partner, at the kitchen line, hits medium-pace volleys at you.
    2. Block each ball into the kitchen with a short, still paddle and a loose grip.
    3. Count resets that land in the kitchen.

    Reps: 3 rounds of 15

  2. 2.Transition reset

    With a partner3.5

Trains resetting while moving forward from the baseline.

    1. Start at the baseline. Your partner feeds a drop; you move in.
    2. Your partner attacks your next ball at your feet.
    3. Reset it into the kitchen, split-step, and keep moving in.

    Reps: 10 balls, then switch

  3. 3.Reset under fire

    Four players4.0+

    Builds resets against two attackers.

    1. Two players at the kitchen line attack; two players start at mid-court and defend.
    2. Defenders score a point if they reset and reach the kitchen line.
    3. Attackers score for winners or attackable resets.

Reps: Games to 7, then swap sides

Common mistakes

  • Swinging at the ball. A reset is a block; the paddle barely moves.
  • Gripping hard. A loose grip absorbs pace.
  • Standing up. Stay low so your paddle face opens under the ball.
  • Trying to hit a winner from mid-court instead of resetting.

What to work on at your level

2.5–3.0Just get the ball back over low.
3.5Land resets in the kitchen from mid-court.
4.0+Reset from awkward positions and both sides of the body, then work forward.

Paddles that help

Resets need a paddle that absorbs pace, so a softer, thicker-core control paddle makes blocking hard balls low much easier.

Common questions

What is a reset in pickleball?
A soft shot, usually a block, that takes a hard ball and puts it into the kitchen so the point goes back to dinking.
Where should I aim a reset?
Into the kitchen, usually straight back or to the middle, low over the net.
Should I reset or counter-attack?
Counter only when the ball is above the net and you're balanced. Below the net or off-balance, reset.
